Preparing Students for College and Careers at the Elementary Level

STREAM Missions is a cloud-based, student-centered, collaborative learning system for Grades 3-5. The project-based, hands-on curriculum is focused on life science, Earth science, and physical science while integrating literacy, arts, math, engineering, and technology throughout.

In every Mission, Crews of four students experience hands-on Explorations that provide structured and guided inquiry into science content through engineering challenges, artistic activities, and math applications. Students progress through the content together on-screen and complete hands-on projects as a team at their shared workstation.

Titles

The Missions program includes 15 titles each for Grades 3, 4, and 5 that provide comprehensive blended instruction and are typically set up in a lab format. This dedicated space consolidates and transforms elementary science education at any school.

Each Mission is organized into sets of integrated activities to be completed in five sequential intervals of instruction. Each interval consists of a Briefing, Reading, and Exploration. Vocabulary, Math, Research, Career, Science, and Social Studies Connections are also included with every title.

Standards Alignments

Development of our STREAM Missions program centered on improving science education for all students and at the same time instilling the critical-thinking and problem-solving skills that will last a lifetime.

STREAM Missions were built on Next Generation Science Standards and Common Core State Standards for mathematics and English language arts.

We take students from textbooks to a real-world application of science through math, art, and engineering, as well as reading practice. Just as importantly, the student-directed collaborative learning environment prepares students for college, career, and life.

Assessment

STREAM Missions is complete with formal digital assessments integrated in the cloud-based content management system. The variety and flexibility of the assessments enable teachers to select what works best for their classroom or a particular student.

Teachers can assess student progress and personalize learning in a variety of ways. Available are pretests and posttests, built-in quizzes, and an assessment creation tool that enables teachers to select from questions crowdsourced from other Missions teachers or created on their own. Assessments can be inserted in the digital content at any point during a Mission.

Every Mission title has a unique Mission Journal that students use to document their progress through a Mission. This journal serves as a proof of learning and provides opportunity for authentic assessments. Teacher facilitators are provided grading rubrics to guide their assessment of Mission Journals and completion of hands-on activities and deliverables.

Students also conduct peer evaluations and weekly self-evaluations throughout the Mission.

Success Stories

The Missions program has been successful in helping students become critical thinkers since 1997. Technology upgrades and integration of additional disciplines have occurred, but the core components that have made Missions successful for more than two decades remain intact.
