Step 1—Meet Blue-Bot: Students explore what a robot is, identify Blue-Bot's inputs and outputs, and practice basic directional commands using onboard buttons.

Step 2—Learn App-Based Coding: Students connect Blue-Bot via Bluetooth and begin programming through the app, learning to sequence commands on screen before sending them to the robot.

Step 3—Solve Challenges: Lessons present real-world scenarios—navigating to a food truck, reducing waste through sorting, or programming a line dance—where students build and test algorithms.

Step 4—Use TacTile Readers: Students arrange physical command tiles on the TacTile Code Reader to create programs, bridging the gap between tactile and digital coding.

Career-Connected Computer Science

The 2nd Grade Computer Science Program connects students to the world of automation, logistics, and digital systems. As they program Blue-Bot to navigate obstacles, sort items, and model delivery routes, students practice the same computational thinking used by robotics engineers, app developers, and supply chain analysts.

Industry Applications: App development, robotics engineering, logistics and supply chain, automation systems, and environmental technology.

In These Lessons, Students Will...

  • What Is a Robot?—Explore the concept of what a robot is and what it does.
  • Programmer Says...—Explore the concepts of being a programmer and using their senses to follow commands.
  • Follow Your Nose—Apply the concept of 90° angles to pivoting and making turns.
  • Friendly Functionality—Explain and demonstrate input/output options and identify limitations that Blue-Bot has and how they could be resolved.
  • Blended Movements—Use Blue-Bot to navigate to the proper letters to form words using the appropriate buttons.
  • Let's Make a Move—Create and execute basic programs to move from a starting to a stopping position while avoiding obstacles.
  • Reducing Waste and Operations—Sort items into groups and then count, add, or subtract using the forward and backward motion of Blue-Bot.
  • Blue-Bot Line Dance—Identify patterns in programming by creating squares of different sizes that Blue-Bot will follow.
  • Busy Collecting Nectar—Understand the concept of 10s and 1s while exploring how plants depend on animals for pollination or to move their seeds around.
  • Let's Do the Hokey Pokey—Decompose and program dance commands to program Blue-Bot to dance the Hokey Pokey.
  • Favorite Food Truck—Analyze given situations, determine their setting, and program Blue-Bot to move from a starting point to the correct end point.
  • I Have a Secret—Program their Blue-Bot to meet another Blue-Bot and exchange greetings.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is Blue-Bot different from Bee-Bot?

Blue-Bot has all the same onboard buttons as Bee-Bot plus Bluetooth connectivity, allowing students to also program it through a tablet app. It bridges tactile and screen-based coding.

Do students need tablets?

Tablets are optional. Blue-Bot can be programmed entirely through its onboard buttons, but the Bluetooth app adds an additional programming mode for students who are ready.

What are TacTile Code Readers?

TacTile Code Readers are wooden boards where students place physical command tiles to build programs. Blue-Bot reads the tiles via Bluetooth—bridging physical and digital coding.

How long is the curriculum?

12 lessons at approximately 60 minutes each.

What makes the 2nd Grade Computer Science Program different from Kindergarten and 1st Grade Computer Science Programs?

The 2nd Grade program transitions students from screen-free Bee-Bot programming to Bluetooth-enabled Blue-Bot robots, adding app-based coding and TacTile Code Readers for a more advanced, multi-modal learning experience. It's the bridge between foundational sequencing skills and the block-based coding students will use in 3rd grade and beyond.

Can this program work without the K or 1st Grade Computer Science Programs?

Absolutely! Each grade-level program is sold independently and includes everything you need to get started. That said, many schools find that layering programs across grade levels creates a seamless K–5 computer science pathway that builds skills year over year.
