Coding STEM Boost Kit

Learn Coding by Becoming the Computer.

The Coding STEM Boost Kit teaches grades K–2 students the basics of coding the way young learners learn best — through physical play. Students role-play as robots, acting out code sequences and working through logic challenges without any device, app, or internet connection.
Role-Play as a Robot

Role-Play as a Robot

Students don't watch a robot follow instructions — they become the robot. Acting out code sequences physically (move forward, turn left, stop) makes sequencing and logic tangible for K–2 learners in a way that no screen or worksheet can replicate.

Screen-Free by Design

Screen-Free by Design

No device, no app, no internet connection, no login required. The Coding STEM Boost Kit is fully self-contained. This makes it usable in any classroom, home, or afterschool setting — including those with limited or no access to technology.

Real Coding Concepts, Physical Play

Real Coding Concepts, Physical Play

Sequencing, debugging, and computational thinking are genuine computer science concepts. By acting them out physically, K–2 students develop the conceptual foundation that transfers directly to screen-based coding tools when they're developmentally ready.

Bilingual by Default

Bilingual by Default

Two complete student guides — one in English, one in Spanish — are included in every kit at no extra cost. Every K–2 learner engages with screen-free coding concepts in their home language without any modifications or additional materials.

What Young Learners Will Do

Following the bilingual student guide, K–2 learners play screen-free coding games by role-playing as robots — developing sequencing, debugging, and computational thinking through physical movement and guided play.
  • Role-play as a robot, acting out step-by-step code sequences
  • Follow directional instructions: move forward, turn, stop
  • Practice sequencing — putting steps in the right order to reach a goal
  • Debug coding errors by identifying where a sequence goes wrong
  • Play screen-free coding games using included supplies
  • Develop early computational thinking through physical, guided play
  • Engage with both English and Spanish student guides as needed

Step 1—Read the student guide introduction: understand what coding is, why robots follow instructions in order, and what the screen-free coding games involve.

Step 2—Set up: use the included supplies to prepare the coding game activity following the student guide instructions.

Step 3—Role-play as a robot: one student (or the teacher) gives code instructions; the other student acts them out physically — moving forward, turning, stopping — exactly as a robot would follow code.

Step 4—Sequence: students practice putting instructions in the correct order to reach a goal. What happens when a step is missing? What happens when steps are in the wrong order?

Step 5—Debug: intentionally introduce an error into a code sequence and let students identify where the robot 'went wrong.' Fixing the error is debugging.

Step 6—Switch roles: the student who was the robot becomes the coder, and the activity repeats. Both roles develop different aspects of computational thinking.

The Coding STEM Boost Kit is the only kit in the entire STEM Boost series — across all grade bands — designed specifically around computer science. And it teaches coding the way early childhood research supports: through physical, embodied play rather than screen time.

Robot role-play is a recognized pedagogical approach in early childhood computer science education. When students act out code sequences physically, they internalize the logic of sequencing, conditional thinking, and debugging at a developmental level that transfers to screen-based tools when students are ready. The screen-free format also means the kit works in any setting — no device access required.

Two bilingual student guides are included in every kit — English and Spanish — so every K–2 learner engages with coding concepts in their home language. At $18.75, this is the most affordable introduction to computer science concepts available for kindergarten through grade 2.

Why Teachers Love Coding STEM Boost Kit

Computer Science Centered

Computer Science Centered

The Coding STEM Boost Kit is the only kit in the entire STEM Boost series designed around computer science. Teachers looking for an entry-level CS activity for kindergarten through grade 2 have one choice in this format — and this is it.

Screen-Free Means Always Available

Screen-Free Means Always Available

No device, no login, no app, no internet. The kit works in any classroom, any afterschool program, and any home — including those with limited or no technology access. Screen-free isn't a limitation; it's a feature that makes the kit universally deployable.

Learn Computer Science through Embodied Play

Learn Computer Science through Embodied Play

Research in early childhood education supports physical, embodied approaches to abstract concepts like coding. Robot role-play is not a workaround for no devices — it's a developmentally appropriate method that builds the conceptual foundation before the screen ever turns on.

Bilingual Out of the Box

Bilingual Out of the Box

English and Spanish student guides are both in the box. K–2 teachers in multilingual classrooms don't need to order separately or adapt anything — every student accesses the full screen-free coding experience in their home language.

One Student, One Kit

One Student, One Kit

At $18.75 per kit for one K–2 student, cost-per-learner pricing is clear and scalable. Order by class size with no bundle minimum and no additional technology or infrastructure required.

Works Before and Alongside Screen-Based CS Tools

Works Before and Alongside Screen-Based CS Tools

The kit introduces coding concepts that transfer directly to screen-based tools like ScratchJr or code.org when students are ready. It works as a standalone introduction or as a physical complement to existing technology programs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do students do with the Coding STEM Boost Kit?

Students learn the basics of coding by role-playing as robots. Using the included supplies and bilingual student guide, K–2 learners play screen-free coding games where one student acts as the robot — physically following code instructions like 'move forward,' 'turn left,' and 'stop' — while another student acts as the coder. Students practice sequencing (putting steps in the right order), debugging (finding where a code sequence went wrong), and basic computational thinking, all through guided physical play. No screen, device, or internet required.

Does this kit require a device, app, or internet connection?

No. The Coding STEM Boost Kit is fully screen-free. No device, no app, no login, and no internet connection are required at any point. The kit is self-contained — student guides and all supplies are included. This makes it usable in any classroom, afterschool program, or home setting, including those with limited or no technology access.

What grade levels is this kit designed for?

The Coding STEM Boost Kit is designed for grades K–2, ages 5–8. It is the only kit in the STEM Boost series specifically targeting kindergarten through grade 2 with a computer science focus. The activity is calibrated for early childhood learners who are developing early literacy and following multi-step directions. It is not designed for PreK — for PreK–2 options without a CS focus, see the Music or Structures STEM Boost Kits.

How many students does one kit serve?

One kit serves one student. Every kit contains all the supplies one K–2 student needs to play screen-free coding games, plus two student guides — one in English and one in Spanish. For a class of 25 students, order 25 kits. Note: the robot role-play activity involves two students interacting, but each student needs their own kit to have their own guide and game materials.
