Structures STEM Boost Kit

Observe. Build. Classify.

The Structures STEM Boost Kit gives one PreK–2 student rocket body tubes, pipe cleaners, and bilingual guided steps to explore the structures around them — building shapes, testing them, and sorting what they make into the early classification thinking that underpins all future science learning.
Observe

Observe

Young learners begin by noticing structures in the world around them: buildings, furniture, bridges, trees. The student guide directs attention to what holds things up, what shapes appear most often, and what makes a structure stable — observation as the entry point to engineering thinking.

Build

Build

Students use rocket body tubes and pipe cleaners to build their own shapes and structures. The flexible, sculptable nature of pipe cleaners and the rigidity of cardboard tubes create an immediate contrast: students discover through building what makes a structure hold together or fall apart.

Classify

Classify

Students sort and group the structures they build and observe. Classifying by shape, stability, or material is early science thinking — and the foundation for the more complex structural engineering challenges students will encounter in later grades.

Bilingual By Default

Bilingual By Default

Two complete student guides — one in English, one in Spanish — are included in every kit at no extra cost. Every PreK–2 learner engages with the full observe-build-classify experience in their home language without any modifications.

What Young Learners Will Do

Following the bilingual student guide, PreK–2 learners move through three connected experiences — observing, building, and classifying — developing early science and engineering thinking through hands-on exploration.
  • Observe structures in their environment: buildings, furniture, trees, bridges
  • Describe what they notice — shapes, materials, what holds things up
  • Build shapes and structures using rocket body tubes and pipe cleaners
  • Test their structures: does it stand? Does the shape matter?
  • Sort and classify structures by shape, material, or stability
  • Notice the difference between structures that stay up and those that fall
  • Connect what they built to structures they see in the real world

Step 1—Read the student guide introduction: look around the room together and notice structures — what holds things up? What shapes do you see?

Step 2—Observe: the student guide prompts learners to identify and describe structures in their environment before building anything.

Step 3—Build: use rocket body tubes and pipe cleaners to build shapes and structures. Can you make something that stands on its own? What shape helps it stay up?

Step 4—Test: gently press on the structure. Does the shape affect how stable it is? The student guide asks learners to notice and describe what they observe.

Step 5—Classify: sort the structures built or observed. Group them by shape, by how many sides they have, or by whether they stand on their own.

Step 6—Connect: the student guide closes by asking students to look for similar structures in the real world — bridging the classroom build to everyday life.

The Structures STEM Boost Kit develops three foundational early childhood science competencies in one connected activity: observation, construction, and classification. Each builds on the previous one: you have to observe before you can build intentionally, and you have to build before you have something to classify.

Using rocket body tubes and pipe cleaners gives PreK–2 learners a tactile, flexible building experience. The contrast between rigid cardboard tubes and flexible wire pipe cleaners is itself a lesson in material properties — students feel the difference without needing the vocabulary to describe it yet.

Importantly, this kit is about observation and classification — not structural strength testing. The learning outcome is noticing and sorting, not load-bearing analysis. That distinction keeps the activity developmentally appropriate for PreK–2 and differentiates this kit clearly from the Grades 3–5 Structures Testing STEM Boost Kit.

Why Teachers Love Structures STEM Boost Kit

Observation Is the Skill

Observation Is the Skill

Before students can test or build intentionally, they need to notice. This kit leads with observation: what do you see? What holds it up? What shape is it? Those questions are the foundation of all science thinking at PreK–2.

Tactile Materials That Teach

Tactile Materials That Teach

Rocket body tubes and pipe cleaners aren't arbitrary supply choices. Rigid tubes paired with flexible wire teach material properties through touch before students have the vocabulary. The materials do instructional work on their own.

Bilingual Out of the Box

Bilingual Out of the Box

English and Spanish student guides are both in the box. PreK–2 teachers in multilingual classrooms don't need to order separately or adapt anything — every student gets the full observe-build-classify experience in their home language.

One Student, One Kit

One Student, One Kit

At $13.75 per kit for one early childhood student, cost-per-learner pricing is clear and predictable. Order exactly what your class needs with no bundle minimum or volume requirement.

Bridges Classroom and Real World

Bridges Classroom and Real World

The student guide explicitly connects what students build to structures they can see outside the classroom window. Place-based learning at PreK–2 doesn't require a field trip — it requires a good question and a window.

Supplement, Not a Replacement

Supplement, Not a Replacement

Designed to extend or enrich existing early childhood science instruction. Works as a standalone activity in 45–60 minutes with no additional teacher prep beyond handing out the kit.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do students do with the Structures STEM Boost Kit?

Students observe, build, and classify structures. They start by noticing structures around them — what holds things up, what shapes appear most often — then build their own shapes and structures using the included rocket body tubes and pipe cleaners, and finally sort and classify what they've made. The bilingual student guide walks PreK–2 learners through each stage with age-appropriate instructions in English and Spanish.

How is this different from the Structures Testing STEM Boost Kit?

These are two distinct products for different grade levels with completely different learning focuses. This Structures STEM Boost Kit is for grades PreK–2 and focuses on observing, building, and classifying structures — early childhood science exploration. The Structures Testing STEM Boost Kit (SKU 91455, $18.75) is for grades 3–5 and focuses on how shape affects structural strength — geometry and load analysis. If you are teaching PreK–2, this kit (91452) is the right choice.
