Music STEM Boost Kit

Music, Sounds, and Performance — All in One Kit.

The Music STEM Boost Kit gives one PreK–2 student the supplies and guided steps to build homemade instruments from everyday materials, explore how each design affects the sounds it makes, and then actually perform — early childhood STEM that ends with a show.
Build Homemade Instruments

Build Homemade Instruments

Students use tubes, rubber bands, beads, and tape to design and build instruments from the included supplies. Every design decision — which materials to combine, how to attach them, how tight to stretch a band — affects what the instrument sounds like.

Explore Sounds

Explore Sounds

Students discover that different materials and configurations produce different sounds. Loose rubber bands sound different from tight ones; more beads sound different from fewer. This is sound science made physical and immediate for PreK–2 learners.

Perform

Perform

Students don't just build and put the instrument down. They play it and perform. Performance is the confirmed learning outcome — and the part that makes this kit unique in the STEM Boost series. Music, sounds, and performance all in one experience.

Bilingual by Default

Bilingual by Default

Two complete student guides — one in English, one in Spanish — are included in every kit at no extra cost, so every PreK–2 learner can engage with music, sounds, and performance in their home language without any modifications.

What Young Learners Will Do

Following the bilingual student guide, PreK–2 learners build their own instruments, experiment with how design choices change the sounds they make, and then perform with what they've built.
  • Select and combine supplies: tubes, rubber bands, beads, tape
  • Build a homemade instrument using the included materials
  • Test how design choices affect the sounds the instrument produces
  • Compare sounds: tight vs. loose, more beads vs. fewer, open vs. covered tube
  • Adjust and improve the instrument design based on what they hear
  • Play and perform with their completed instrument
  • Follow along with guided activities in the bilingual student guide

Step 1—Read the student guide introduction: understand the build challenge and the available supplies (tubes, rubber bands, beads, tape).

Step 2—Plan: decide what kind of instrument to build. Will it shake? Pluck? Tap? Students choose their approach before building.

Step 3—Build: combine tubes, rubber bands, beads, and tape to construct the instrument. The student guide provides guided steps appropriate for PreK–2 learners.

Step 4—Test: play the instrument and listen. Does it sound the way the student expected? What could change to make it louder, higher-pitched, or more rhythmic?

Step 5—Adjust: modify one element — tighten a rubber band, add more beads, change tube length — and test the sound again.

Step 6—Perform: play the completed instrument as a performance. This is the confirmed final stage of the activity and the unique outcome of this kit.

The Music STEM Boost Kit is the only kit in the PreK–2 STEM Boost series with a confirmed performance component. Students don't just build and test — they play and perform. This positions the kit as equally at home in a music program as in a STEM classroom, and makes it a natural fit for STEAM-focused schools and afterschool programs looking for activities that cross disciplines.

The build-test-adjust sequence embedded in the student guide develops early engineering thinking without framing it as engineering: students make design choices, hear the consequences, and change something to get a different result. At PreK–2, that cause-and-effect loop is the foundation for all future science and engineering learning.

Two bilingual guides are included in every kit — English and Spanish — so the same music-making experience is available to every early childhood learner without any modifications or additional cost.

Why Teachers Love Music STEM Boost Kit

Performance Is the Point

Performance Is the Point

This is the only PreK–2 STEM Boost Kit that ends with a performance. Students build instruments, learn how to play them, and then actually perform — a complete music-making experience in one bilingual kit.

Sound Science Through Making

Sound Science Through Making

Students don't learn about sound by reading about it. They build something, listen to what it does, change something, and listen again. That cause-and-effect loop is early engineering thinking and early science thinking in the same activity.

Bilingual Out of the Box

Bilingual Out of the Box

English and Spanish student guides are both in the box. PreK–2 teachers in multilingual classrooms don't need to order separately or adapt anything — every student gets the full build-play-perform experience in their home language.

One Student, One Kit

One Student, One Kit

At $13.75 per kit for one early childhood student, cost-per-learner pricing is clear and scalable. Order by head count with no bundle minimum or volume requirement.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do students do with the Music STEM Boost Kit?

Students build their own homemade instruments from the included supplies — tubes, rubber bands, beads, and tape — then play them and perform. The student guide moves PreK–2 learners through building, testing how each design choice affects the sounds the instrument makes, adjusting the design, and finally performing with the completed instrument. Music, sounds, and performance are all part of the confirmed activity.

How is this different from the Musical Instruments STEM Boost Kit?

These are two distinct products for different grade levels. This Music STEM Boost Kit is designed for grades PreK–2 and focuses on music, sounds, and performance — building instruments and putting on a show. The Musical Instruments STEM Boost Kit (SKU 46201, $10.75) is designed for grades 3–5 and focuses on sound waves and the science of how instruments produce different frequencies. If you are teaching PreK–2, this kit is the right choice.
