Venturer Program Grades K-2 Engineering

Design. Build. Test.

Young engineers explore the design process through three subject areas—construction challenges, literature-based engineering, and structural design—developing critical thinking and collaboration skills.
Design and Construction

Design and Construction

Students use the engineering design process to plan, build, and test solutions to real-world problems, developing spatial reasoning and fine motor skills.

Engineering in Literature

Engineering in Literature

Familiar storybooks become engineering prompts as students design and build solutions inspired by characters and narratives, connecting literacy to STEM.

Structural Engineering

Structural Engineering

Each student receives a Structures STEM Boost Kit to build and test towers, bridges, and enclosures, investigating what makes structures strong and stable.

Cross-Curricular Connections

Cross-Curricular Connections

Activities integrate literacy, math, and science standards so program leaders reinforce multiple subject areas in every session.

What Students Will Do

Through ten hours of engineering activities, students practice the design process while building creative solutions to hands-on challenges.
  • Sketch designs and plan construction before building
  • Build towers, bridges, and enclosures using varied materials
  • Test structures for strength and stability
  • Redesign and improve based on testing results
  • Connect storybook characters to engineering challenges
  • Collaborate on group design projects and share solutions

Step 1—Unbox and Organize: Open the Venturer kit and sort materials by subject area. The Structures STEM Boost Kits are individually packaged for each student.

Step 2—Choose Your Subject: Select from Design and Construction, Engineering in Literature, or Structures. Each includes multiple guided activities.

Step 3—Follow the Lesson Plans: Step-by-step instructions, design templates, and student handouts are included. No engineering background needed.

Step 4—Facilitate and Observe: Guide students through the design-build-test cycle. Activities work with pairs or small groups of twenty-four students.

Step 5—Assess and Celebrate: Use reflection prompts and student design portfolios to capture learning and showcase student work.

Engineering Design and Problem Solving

The Venturer Engineering program develops foundational engineering practices—asking questions, defining problems, designing solutions, and optimizing designs—through hands-on construction and testing. Students learn to iterate on their designs, building resilience and creative thinking.

Activities align with NGSS engineering design standards for K–2 and support crosscutting concepts like structure and function, cause and effect, and systems. The literature integration also reinforces ELA standards, making this a naturally cross-curricular program.

Career connections include civil engineer, architect, construction manager, and industrial designer.
