Hydraulic Engineering and Design

The Venturer Engineering program develops engineering practices through hydraulic arms and invention challenges. Students learn to define problems, develop and test solutions, optimize designs, and communicate results—skills that transfer directly to STEM careers.

Activities align with NGSS engineering design standards for grades 6–8 and support crosscutting concepts like systems and system models, structure and function, and cause and effect.

Career connections include mechanical engineer and product designer.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Venturer and Voyager?

Venturer programs include ten hours of content across two subjects. Voyager programs expand to twenty hours with additional friction climbers, hydrodynamics, truss bridges, and a teacher’s guide. Both serve twenty-four students.

Do students need prior engineering experience?

No. T-Bot Challenge Sets include step-by-step assembly guides and are designed for students with no prior engineering experience. The hydraulic mechanism uses syringes and water—no electronics or programming required.

How do T-Bots work?

T-Bots are hydraulic arms powered by syringes, tubes, and water. Students press syringes to create fluid pressure that moves the arm—no batteries, charging, or electronics required. All hydraulic components are included in the Challenge Sets.

Which T-Bot components are consumable?

The Challenge Set accessories (boards, balls, holder) are reusable across program cycles. The T-Bot Hydraulic Arm Kits contain consumable components (syringes, tubing, cardboard parts) that are designed for single-student use. Replacement kits are available for new cohorts

Is this aligned to education standards?

Yes. Activities align with NGSS engineering design standards for grades 6–8 and introduce computational thinking standards.

Can I host a competition event?

Absolutely. The T-Bot challenges and invention pitches are designed to culminate in exciting showcase events that work well for parent nights or program celebrations.
