Venturer Program Grades 6-8 Aerospace

Glide. Launch. Discover.

Middle school students explore advanced flight science through glider design and water rocketry, applying Newton’s laws and engineering design principles to real flight challenges.
Glider Design Engineering

Glider Design Engineering

Each student receives a Gliders STEM Boost Kit to design, build, and test hang glider models, investigating how wing shape, weight, and balance affect flight.

Water Rocket Science

Water Rocket Science

Students design and launch water rockets using the Getting Started Package, testing how water volume, air pressure, and fin design affect altitude and distance.

Newton’s Laws in Action

Newton’s Laws in Action

Every activity connects to Newton’s laws of motion, helping students see physics principles in real-time through their own flight experiments.

Data Collection and Analysis

Data Collection and Analysis

Students record flight distances, hang times, and launch angles, building skills in measurement, data analysis, and evidence-based reasoning.

What Students Will Do

Through ten hours of aerospace activities, students design flying machines and analyze their performance using real physics.
  • Design and build hang glider models to test aerodynamics
  • Launch water rockets and measure altitude and distance
  • Investigate how design variables affect flight performance
  • Apply Newton’s three laws of motion to real experiments
  • Collect and analyze flight data to support conclusions
  • Compete in launch distance and accuracy challenges

Step 1—Unbox and Organize: Sort materials by subject area. Glider kits are individually packaged; the Water Rockets GSP is a class set.

Step 2—Choose Your Subject: Start with either Gliders or Water Rockets. Each includes multiple guided investigations.

Step 3—Follow the Lesson Plans: Step-by-step instructions, safety guidelines, and student data sheets included. No aerospace background needed.

Step 4—Facilitate and Observe: Guide students through design-build-launch cycles. Activities work with twenty-four students.

Step 5—Assess and Celebrate: Host a launch competition and use data analysis activities to demonstrate learning.

Forces, Motion, and Flight

The Venturer Aerospace program builds deep understanding of Newton’s laws, aerodynamics, and engineering design through hands-on flight experiments. Students develop science practices including designing investigations, collecting data, analyzing results, and constructing arguments from evidence.

Activities align with NGSS for grades 6–8 in physical science (forces and motion, energy) and engineering design. Crosscutting concepts include cause and effect, systems, and stability and change.

Career connections include aerospace engineer, physicist, pilot, and flight test engineer.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Venturer and Voyager?

Venturer programs include ten hours of content across two subjects. Voyager programs expand to twenty hours with additional rubber band planes and AP Rockets and Gliders. Both serve twenty-four students.

Do water rockets require special equipment?

The Getting Started Package includes everything needed for safe water rocket launches. You will need access to water and outdoor space.

Is outdoor space required?

Water rocket launches require outdoor space. Glider activities can be done indoors in a gymnasium or large room.

Are the kits reusable?

Glider kits include consumable building materials. The Water Rockets GSP equipment is reusable across multiple launches and program cycles.

Is this aligned to education standards?

Yes. Activities align with NGSS for grades 6–8 in forces and motion, energy, and engineering design.

Can I run this as a one-week camp?

Yes. Ten hours fits well into a one-week camp format with two-hour daily sessions. Water rocket launch day makes an excellent final event.
