One Bin, Unlimited Engineering Possibilities

The STEAM Builder Bin is an open-ended engineering platform. Connectors, wheels, gears, motors, a solar panel, and propellers combine with tiered idea cards to support builds from simple structures to motorized vehicles.
Modular Component System

Modular Component System

Five separate packs (Connector, Wheel, Gear, Mount, Accessory) organize into a 6-compartment tray, making it easy for students to find parts and for teachers to inventory and restock specific packs.

Tiered Challenge Cards

Tiered Challenge Cards

Idea cards progress from beginner builds (simple structures) through intermediate challenges (vehicles with wheels) to expert projects (motorized and solar-powered machines), scaling across Grades 3-8.

Real Power Sources

Real Power Sources

A DC motor with AA batteries and a solar panel give students hands-on experience with electrical and renewable energy, taking builds beyond static structures into functional machines.

Built-In Storage

Built-In Storage

The shallow purple bin with lid and 6-compartment tray keeps all components organized and protected. Students can store work-in-progress builds between sessions without losing parts.

What Students Will Do

Students design, build, test, and iterate using real engineering components and power sources, with challenge cards guiding the progression.
  • Build structures using connectors and mylar tubes
  • Design vehicles with wheels, gears, and axles
  • Add motor power with DC motor and battery pack
  • Harness solar energy with the included solar panel
  • Launch propeller-driven machines using rubber band or electric propellers
  • Progress from beginner to expert challenges using tiered idea cards

Open the Bin, Start Building

The STEAM Builder Bin is designed for immediate, student-driven engineering.

Step 1: Choose a Challenge—Students select an idea card at their skill level. Beginner cards guide simple structural builds. Intermediate cards introduce wheels and gears. Expert cards incorporate motors, solar power, and propellers.

Step 2: Design and Build—Using connectors, mylar tubes, wheels, gears, and mounts, students construct their designs. The modular component system lets students snap, connect, and reconfigure without glue or permanent fasteners.

Step 3: Test and Iterate—Students test their builds, identify what works and what doesn't, and redesign. The durable components mean students can rebuild as many times as needed. Completed builds store safely in the bin between sessions.

Engineering Thinking at Every Grade Level

The STEAM Builder Bin develops engineering design thinking through open-ended challenges that scale with student ability. Younger students (Grades 3-4) build spatial reasoning through structural challenges. Middle students (Grades 5-6) add mechanical systems with wheels and gears. Older students (Grades 6-8) incorporate electrical and solar power, learning about energy conversion and circuit basics.

Because builds are open-ended, students practice creative problem-solving, iterative design, and failure analysis—skills that transfer directly to every STEM discipline. The tiered challenge cards provide scaffolding without limiting student creativity.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many students can use one bin?

Each bin supports one to three students. For a class of thirty, order thirty bins for one-to-one or ten bins for groups of three. Volume pricing kicks in at thirty or more units.

What is the difference between beginner and expert challenges?

Beginner idea cards focus on simple structures using connectors and tubes. Intermediate cards add wheels and gears. Expert cards incorporate the DC motor, solar panel, and propellers for powered builds.

Are the components reusable?

Yes. All structural components (connectors, tubes, wheels, gears, mounts) are durable and designed for repeated assembly and disassembly. Consumables like batteries and balloons can be replaced from the Accessory Pack.

Can I reorder individual component packs?

Yes. The Wheel Pack, Gear Pack, Mount Pack, Connector Pack, and Accessory Pack are all sold separately for restocking. This lets you replace only what wears out.

Does the solar panel work indoors?

The solar panel performs best in direct sunlight but can generate some power under bright indoor lighting. Testing under different light conditions is itself a valuable engineering challenge.

What grade level is this best for?

The tiered challenge system spans Grades 3 through 8. Younger students start with structural builds, while older students progress to motorized and solar-powered machines. The same bin adapts to every grade level.
