EZ Start Raceway

Design. Build. Race. Repeat.

The EZ Start Raceway puts a complete two-lane racing experience in your classroom. With a manual start gate for consistent launches and a finish gate that identifies the winner instantly, students stay focused on the engineering behind every race.
EZ Start Gate

EZ Start Gate

A mechanical launch mechanism provides consistent, repeatable starts for every race. Students position their dragsters and trigger the gate to release both cars simultaneously.

EZ Finish Gate

EZ Finish Gate

A blinking light identifies the winning car at the finish line, giving students clear visual feedback without the need for electronic timing equipment.

Upgradable to Launch Pods

Upgradable to Launch Pods

The redesigned EZ Start Raceway includes a junction box that accepts launch pods (sold separately), giving you an upgrade path to CO2 cartridge launching without replacing the entire system.

Flexible Track Setup

Flexible Track Setup

Use the raceway on the floor with EZ Track sections or elevate it on a FasTrak Elevated Racetrack for better visibility and protection from foot traffic.

What Students Will Do

From designing their dragster to watching it cross the finish line, students experience the full engineering design process through competitive racing.
  • Design and build CO2-powered dragsters using engineering principles
  • Test aerodynamics, mass, and friction through iterative design changes
  • Launch dragsters on a two-lane track using the EZ Start Gate
  • Analyze race results and identify variables that affect performance
  • Compete in head-to-head races with immediate winner identification
  • Apply the engineering design process to improve dragster speed and consistency

Step 1—Set Up the Track: Lay out EZ Track sections on the floor (sold separately) or mount on a FasTrak Elevated Racetrack. Position the EZ Start Gate at one end and the EZ Finish Gate at the other.

Step 2—Prepare the Dragsters: Students design and build their CO2-powered dragsters (sold separately). Attach monofilament guide line through each dragster's guide hole.

Step 3—Stage the Race: Place two dragsters at the EZ Start Gate. Ensure both cars are properly aligned on the guide lines.

Step 4—Launch: Trigger the EZ Start Gate's mechanical release to launch both dragsters simultaneously. For programs that upgrade with launch pods (sold separately), the included junction box connects directly to the pods for CO2 cartridge launching.

Step 5—Identify the Winner: The EZ Finish Gate's blinking light indicates which dragster crossed first. Students record results and analyze what design factors affected performance.

Engineering Through Competition: The EZ Start Raceway transforms dragster racing from a standalone activity into a structured engineering experience. Students don't just build cars and watch them go. They design, test, analyze results, and redesign. The two-lane format means every race is a direct comparison, and the blinking finish gate makes outcomes immediately clear.

Connecting Physics to Performance: Every design decision a student makes connects to a physics principle. The shape of the dragster affects aerodynamic drag. Its mass affects acceleration. The alignment of the CO2 cartridge affects thrust direction. Students see these concepts play out in real time on the track, making abstract ideas concrete and testable.

Building Career-Connected Skills: Dragster racing programs connect directly to careers in automotive engineering, aerospace, manufacturing, and industrial design. Students practice the same iterative design process used by professional engineers: prototype, test, collect data, and improve.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the EZ Start Raceway and the EZ Start Gate?

The EZ Start Raceway is a complete race system that includes both an EZ Start Gate and an EZ Finish Gate. The EZ Start Gate (SKU 33133) is the launch mechanism sold separately for programs that already have a finish gate or want to build a custom setup.

Do I need to buy track sections separately?

Yes. The EZ Start Raceway provides the start and finish gates. You'll need EZ Track Raceway sections (SKU 44618) for a floor-level setup, or a FasTrak Elevated Racetrack (SKU 37989) for an elevated setup.

Can I upgrade the EZ Start Raceway to use launch pods?

Yes. The redesigned EZ Start Raceway includes a junction box that connects directly to launch pods (sold separately). This gives you an upgrade path from the mechanical gate to CO2 cartridge launching without replacing the entire system. This upgrade option was not available on older models.

What types of vehicles can I race on the EZ Start Raceway?

The EZ Start Raceway is designed primarily for CO2-powered dragsters. It works with Pitsco's full line of CO2 dragster blanks and EZ Build dragster kits.

Can the EZ Start Raceway support TSA or other competition formats?

Yes. Dragster racing programs using the EZ Start Raceway align with Technology Student Association (TSA) competitive events. The two-lane format supports head-to-head elimination and round-robin tournament structures.

What grade levels is the EZ Start Raceway designed for?

The EZ Start Raceway is designed for Grades 6–12. CO2 dragster programs are most common in middle school and high school CTE, engineering, and physics courses.
