Venturer Program Grades 3-5 Environmental Science

Power. Grow. Sustain.

Students investigate renewable energy, solar power, and living ecosystems through three subject areas that connect environmental science to real-world sustainability challenges.
Renewable Energy Exploration

Renewable Energy Exploration

Small groups use iSprowt kits to build working models of renewable energy systems, discovering how wind, water, and solar power generate electricity.

Solar Power Engineering

Solar Power Engineering

Each student receives a Solar Power STEM Boost Kit to design and test solar-powered devices, connecting energy science to engineering design.

Terrarium Ecosystems

Terrarium Ecosystems

Students use the Parametric Studio Terrarium to build and observe a self-sustaining ecosystem, investigating water cycles, plant needs, and environmental balance.

Real-World Connections

Real-World Connections

Activities link environmental science to current sustainability topics, helping students understand why renewable energy matters in their communities.

What Students Will Do

Across ten hours of guided investigations, students explore energy systems and ecosystems through building, testing, and observation.
  • Build working renewable energy models using iSprowt kits
  • Design and test solar-powered devices
  • Construct a terrarium and observe ecosystem dynamics
  • Compare renewable and nonrenewable energy sources
  • Measure and record solar energy output
  • Discuss sustainability and environmental stewardship

Energy and Earth Systems

The Venturer Environmental Science program builds understanding of energy transfer, ecosystems, and human impacts on the environment through direct experimentation. Students develop science practices like planning investigations, analyzing data, and constructing explanations from evidence.

Activities align with NGSS for grades 3–5 in earth and life science, supporting crosscutting concepts like energy and matter, systems, and cause and effect. By working with real renewable energy systems and living terrariums, students develop lasting understanding.

Career connections include renewable energy technician, environmental engineer, ecologist, and sustainability consultant.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Venturer and Voyager?

Venturer programs include ten hours of content across three subjects. Voyager programs expand to twenty hours across five subjects with additional activities covering natural disasters, plants, and human impacts. Both serve twenty-four students.

Do students need prior science knowledge?

No. Activities are designed for students with no prior environmental science background. Lesson plans scaffold learning from basic concepts to more complex investigations.

Does the terrarium require ongoing maintenance?

Minimal. Once assembled, the terrarium is largely self-sustaining. It serves as an observation tool during the program and can continue as a classroom resource afterward.

Are the solar kits reusable?

The Solar Power STEM Boost Kits include both reusable components and consumable materials. Contact Pitsco for replacement supplies.

Is this aligned to education standards?

Yes. Activities align with NGSS for grades 3–5 in energy, ecosystems, and earth systems.

Can I combine this with other Venturer programs?

Absolutely! Many programs run all three Venturer subjects (Environmental Science, Aerospace, and Engineering) across a semester or summer to provide thirty hours of content.
