T-Bot® Hydraulic Arm with Challenge Set

Build. Connect. Control. Challenge.

Students don’t just learn about hydraulics—they build a working robot arm powered by syringes and water. The included Challenge Set extends learning with structured activities that test precision, coordination, and problem-solving.

What Students Will Do

From their first syringe connection to their final challenge, students experience the full engineering design process through hands-on hydraulic construction.
  • Assemble a multi-axis hydraulic robot arm from kit components
  • Connect syringes and tubing to create fluid-power systems
  • Explore how water pressure transfers force through closed systems
  • Manipulate Ping-Pong balls using the Challenge Set’s pick-and-place activities
  • Answer review questions that reinforce hydraulic concepts
  • Collaborate in teams of 1–3 to solve engineering challenges
  • Apply the engineering design process to real mechanical problems

Step 1—Unbox the Kit: Open the T-Bot Hydraulic Arm Kit and identify all components. Review the downloadable Builder’s Guide for assembly instructions.

Step 2—Build the Arm: Students follow step-by-step directions to assemble the hydraulic arm using syringes, tubing, and wooden components. Fill the syringes with water to power the arm.

Step 3—Test and Adjust: Once assembled, students test each syringe control to understand how water pressure moves different parts of the arm. Add food coloring (sold separately) to see which syringe powers which axis.

Step 4—Set Up the Challenge: Attach the Challenge Set arm holder, set up rectangular and stacking boards, and place Ping-Pong balls in starting positions.

Step 5—Complete Challenges: Students work through guided activities that require precise arm control—picking up, placing, and stacking objects while answering review questions about hydraulic mechanics.

Hydraulic Engineering Made Tangible

The T-Bot Hydraulic Arm with Challenge Set puts fluid power principles directly into students’ hands. Instead of reading about Pascal’s Law and hydraulic systems in a textbook, students build a working mechanism that demonstrates these concepts through physical cause and effect.

Building the Robot Arm

As students assemble the T-Bot arm, they learn how syringes connected by tubing create a closed hydraulic system. Pushing one syringe displaces water through the tube, extending the connected syringe and moving the arm. This direct, observable connection between input and output makes abstract physics concepts concrete and memorable.

Applying Knowledge Through Challenges

The Challenge Set transforms the built arm from a demonstration tool into an engineering challenge. Students must coordinate multiple hydraulic controls simultaneously to manipulate objects with precision. This develops teamwork, spatial reasoning, and problem-solving skills while reinforcing the mechanical principles they learned during assembly.

Frequently Asked Questions

What grade levels can use the T-Bot Hydraulic Arm with Challenge Set?

The T-Bot is designed for Grades 3–12. Younger students focus on basic assembly and observation, while older students explore advanced hydraulic principles and complete all challenge activities. The Elementary STEM Activity Guide provides age-appropriate adaptations for Grades 3–5.

How many students can work with one kit?

Each kit serves 1–3 students. For a full classroom, you would need multiple kits. Contact a Pitsco Education Advisor for multi-kit pricing.

What materials do students need beyond what’s in the kit?

Water is the only additional material required to operate the hydraulic arm. Assorted Food Coloring (sold separately, SKU 56736) is recommended to help students visualize which syringe controls which part of the arm.

How long does it take to build and complete all activities?

Plan for 5–8 class periods total. Assembly typically takes 2–3 periods, exploration takes 1–2 periods, and the Challenge Set activities take 2–3 periods. Time varies based on grade level and prior experience.

Can the kit be reused across multiple classes?

Yes. The T-Bot arm components are durable and designed for repeated use year over year. The Challenge Set materials (boards and Ping-Pong balls) are also reusable. You may need to replace syringes and tubing over time.
