Structures made with straws and pipe cleaners might look simple, but they offer a range of learning. Geometric figures and their strengths, ratios, structural designs, and static forces are some of the subjects this guide will help you and your students to really soak up!
The Straw Structures Teacher’s Guide contains NSTA, NCTM, and ITEEA standards addressed; teacher and student instructions for a variety of math, science, and engineering activities; pretests and posttests; resource pages; and puzzles. Contains separate activities for middle school and high school students.
Equipment and materials needed to complete guide activities include the Pitsco Straw Structures – Getting Started Package, scissors, spring scale, hanging weights, tape measure, ruler, grid paper, stopwatch, straws with 1/8-inch inside diameter, several hundred pipe cleaners, and standard classroom tools and materials. Note: This list is for all activities; individual activities don’t require all listed materials.
The printed version of the Straw Structures Teacher’s Guide is available for purchase, or you can download a digital copy for free here.
