Big Oz water rocket makes a splash

The size of the Big Oz’s nose cone may catch people’s attention, but it’s the parachute concealed in the body tube that sets this water rocket apart from others.

The Big Oz Water Rocket Kit delivers the same excitement and math and science experimentation as a traditional water rocket, but the 12-inch parachute recovery system hidden in the body tube provides a more-stable, less-destructive landing. Such performance translates into more launches and fewer repairs made to this rocket than other rocket kits. Mechanical Designer Gary Jones said this was the primary reason for developing the Big Oz Kit.

“One of the feedbacks about the Stratoblaster is that teachers wanted it to have a parachute for a better landing,” Jones said. “The challenge was getting a nose cone that would come off at apogee. A Wiffle ball worked the best.”

The kit includes a 20-ounce plastic bottle, rocket tube, Wiffle ball, parachute materials, user guide, and other needed materials. Building and launching the rocket requires basic tools, cool-melt glue, white glue, the AquaPort Launcher by Pitsco, and a tire pump.

The Big Oz is the latest addition to the popular line of water rocket kits and equipment that Pitsco Education offers, including the AquaPort Launcher and Competitive Stager and the Water Rockets Getting Started Teacher’s Guide.
