Students become active participants as they engage in LUMA's story. They’re invited by LUMA’s two inventors to embark on a journey helping different businesses: learners discover which industry professionals will find LUMA to be the most useful and then learn how to write and test code for LUMA to perform tasks along the way.

As students work, they’ll learn how companies can use robots to be more effective and efficient. Students even explore 11 different careers not typically associated with computer science, from restaurant owner and event specialist to sound engineer and emergency responder.

Throughout the activities, students take notes in their Coding Journal and test their knowledge through quizzes, checkpoints, exploration activities, and challenges.

LUMA® Builds Real-World Coders

LUMA® connects coding to the real world from day one.

Instead of isolated programming exercises, students step into a series of industry-inspired challenges. Guided by LUMA’s inventors, learners help different businesses solve problems using robotics—discovering how coding drives efficiency, creativity, and innovation across multiple fields.

Students explore 11 diverse careers, including roles not traditionally associated with computer science, and see firsthand how robots support professionals such as restaurant owners, event specialists, sound engineers, and emergency responders.

Coding is contextual, purposeful, and relevant.

Cross-Curricular by Design

LUMA integrates naturally into English, math, science, and even music. The standards-aligned curriculum is structured to support collaborative learning, with students working in pairs to develop both technical skills and 21st-century competencies.

Students build fluency in:

  • Coding terminology and structure
  • Planning, testing, and debugging programs
  • Evaluating the impacts of computing and technology
  • Teamwork, communication, and problem-solving

Structured Guidance + Creative Freedom

LUMA provides clear, step-by-step instruction—but it doesn’t stop there. Students are challenged to extend their learning through creative application.

They can program LUMA to:

  • Draw shapes and patterns
  • Follow lines and detect obstacles
  • Play music and sound effects
  • Create light shows and animations
  • They can also engineer custom robot attachments using LEGO® Technic-compatible pegs and beams, reinforcing mechanical design alongside programming logic.

Built-In Reflection and Assessment

Throughout the experience, students document their learning in a Coding Journal and complete quizzes, checkpoints, and challenges that reinforce key concepts. When students use LUMA, they aren't just learning to code, they are learning how coding works in the real world.
