1st-Quarter 2014 Scholarship Winner

Name: Heather Roach

Role: Chemistry Teacher, FIRST Tech Challenge Coach

School: East High School

Located: Anchorage, Alaska

Number years teaching: 19

What do you teach and to what grade(s)?

Grade 10 Chemistry, Grades 11-12 Anatomy & Physiology, and Grades 9-12 FIRST robotics

Why do you like what you teach?

I love teaching chemistry as it provides the opportunity to discover the nature of science and apply mathematical concepts through inquiry and hands-on activities.

Did you always want to be a teacher?

No – I can remember at one time I wanted to be a truck driver!

Why do you like to teach with hands-on products?

Hands-on products allow students to be more engaged in their learning experiences.

How does using hands-on products improve the students’ learning experiences?

Using hands-on products allows students to become engaged in their learning. Learning can’t happen effectively if students are passive recipients of knowledge. They need to be able to discover and experience learning.

How long have you been using Pitsco Education products?

I’ve been using Pitsco Education products for the past six years.

What is your favorite Pitsco Education product and why?

Tough question – there are tons of great Pitsco products. All of the great TETRIX®-related products have been wonderful in helping my students learn about robotics.

How do the students respond to Pitsco Education products?

The response has been overwhelmingly positive. Students love receiving new products (like this year’s introduction of the worm gear) and figuring out how to use it in the most effective way.

What's your greatest teaching accomplishment?

Earning National Board Certification in Adolescent Science. The year-long process provided an excellent opportunity for me to hone my teaching skills. Additionally, I’m extremely proud of the consistent successes my robotics teams have demonstrated over the past six years.
