Product Design Specialist

SUMMARY: The Product Design Specialist employs a range of creative design, inventive, and engineering skills to design new products for the STEM education market. This role involves idea brainstorming, designing, modeling, prototyping, and testing of new product concepts, as well as innovation improvements to existing products. The ideal candidate is creative, innovative, and inventive with strong problem-solving, engineering and interpersonal skills. This position will be highly collaborative with Marketing and Curriculum departments, and across other business units as impacted by potential new product needs. These tasks are accomplished by performing the following duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following (other duties may be assigned):

  • Brainstorming new product ideas as part of a team
  • Taking part in department and multidisciplinary team meetings
  • Designing and prototyping products involving mechanical and electromechanical components and systems
  • Creating working prototypes using laser cutting, 3-D printing, and machine tool equipment fabrication methods
  • Developing CAD models of product prototypes using 3-D software (SolidWorks)
  • Insuring manufacturability and ease of assembly is designed into products
  • Creating Bills of Materials (BOM) and working within budgets and timeline schedules
  • Modifying ideas and designs per feedback received from team members and colleagues
  • Applying product safety and identified compliance requirements
  • Working with internal and external manufacturing teams to transition approved R&D designs to production


  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field
  • Aptitude for planning, creativity, accuracy, problem solving, initiative, continuous improvement, teamwork, communications, and follow-through
  • Proficient understanding of technology, prototyping skills, manufacturing production methods, and engineering materials such as metals and plastics
  • Demonstrated understanding of mechanical and electromechanical systems
  • Proficiency with 3-D CAD modeling software (SolidWorks preferred)
  • Excellent listening and communication skills to discuss product concepts and comprehend feedback from design reviews
  • Experience and understanding of electronic systems, coding, and robotics a major plus
